You’ll need to understand this rhythm for Part 8 of the 1st edition of The New Nine-Note Recorder Method
. There is no syncopation in the 2nd edition but syncopation is used in the
BEYOND the Nine-Note Recorder Method books*. This isn’t really a new rhythm but it might seem like it is. Syncopation is two eighth notes with a quarter note in between. Syncopation adds
rhythmic interest. It looks like this:
Think about the song “Go tell it on the mountain over the hill and everywhere.” The words “o-ver the” use this rhythm. So when you play a song with the above rhythm in it, just think in your mind: O-VER
THE. Some people think: “SYN-CO-PA.”Clap the rhythm. Slap your leg on “SYN.” Your hand should be up when you say “CO” and slap again while still on “CO
.” Then your hand should be up when you say “PA.” Now clap the rhythm while someone else claps straight quarter notes. This clapping exercise will prepare you to play many of the duets.

syncopation. If you are progressing through BEYOND the Nine-Note Recorder Method
