You will learn this rhythm in Part 4 of The New Nine-Note Recorder Method.

note-readingThis is an eighth note. Eighth notes get one half of a beat.

You should say the number when you slap your leg;
you should say “and ” when your hand is in the air.

This example doesn’t have numbers in the time signature.
Instead it has a “C” which stands for common time.
The most common time signature is 4/4 time so it may be abbreviated as shown.
Measures are units between the vertical lines, called bar lines.
The notes in each of the measures above add up to four beats.
